Burnley, the knife designer, not the place.

I love a pocket knife and I love accent colours. Imagine my delight when I found a pocket knife with accent colours! I've got a couple of Boker knives, they're well made, sharp and reasonably priced. I bought this one as a treat for myself, no reason other than I liked the colours and I like it's style.

It's naughty in the UK, the blade locks and it's 84mm long. We're only allowed to call a knife a pocket knife if it doesn't lock and the blade is 76mm or less. So it's not a knife for putting in your pocket if you're going away from home. It's not like I'm short of UK legal pocket knives so it doesn't really matter. Inspite of this, there's a wire pocket clip round the back that is swappable to the front if you prefer.

Wire Pocket Clip.
The blade is 83mm Nitro-V steel (I've no idea what this is, but it's got a whizzy name). They're so proud of it, they've gone to the trouble of laser etching it beneath the thumb stud on the blade. As you can see they've also etched the knife designer's name on there too. Burnley is a town in the North West not a million miles away from me and for this reason I have christened the knife Burnley. Not after Lucas, after Burnley the town.

The scales are grey G10, so it's light, the texture of the machining means it feels nice when you hold it. The beveled edges of the scales show off the layers in the G10.

Pivot & Etching.
The pivot is a ceramic bearing and the lock also releases the blade. Slide the lock, little flick of the wrist and k'pow the blade swings out and then locks into place. Makes a right satisfying clunk when the blade opens. If you're not the wrist flicking type then the red accent thumb studs provide an equally rewarding opening. The machining on the thumb studs, lock and blade is spot on.

Half Open, Half Closed.
At full open, feels right. The handle is the perfect size for my hand, the thumb studs are in the perfect place, the lock forces my fingers into a safe place so closing becomes a reverse of opening, pull back the lock, flick the wrist and k'pow it's folded. Another satisfying clunk awaits when you close it. The lock slide has got a nice weight, requires enough pull to be sure but isn't too heavy that you need to use both sides.

Full Open.
The bevelling and machining on the faces reveal the layers in the G10 and provide a nice smooth fingering surface. When it's open you see the machining on the end of the blade, it's well rounded and is clearly well done. I've tried a couple of different lanyards but not found one that suits it yet. Maybe I'll update this page when I finally tie what it's looking for.

Scale Layers.

The blade is sharp out of the box and has a grind that is easy to resharpen. It's a classic drop point shape, is PVD coated in black and has a nice matte finish. The safe edge of the blade is almost parallel with the base of the knife, which feels good to hold, and is easy on the eye!

Thoughts

I've not bought the knife to use for a specific task, if I'm being entirely honest the colours were the main reason I bought it! As I've said it's not a knife you can cary away from home without risking the long arm of the law, so I don't imagine it's going to get much proper use. It's very satisfying flicking it open and closed, makes boring calls less tiresome! Maybe that'll be it's main purpose? Which I guess for a knife is a bit disappointing (it's a good job it's not sentient).

I'm delighted with the knife, it's a shame the UK is so knife-phobic that I won't be able to use it away from home, but them's the rules. I'm happy that I bought it and I'm sure it'll bring me much pleasure in the future. If you like highlight colours, nice machining, and wicked smooth actions check it out from your favourite knife flogger. Be quick though, they only made 1000 of them and it's sold out in plenty places.
