Other Interests

I do other things as well as radio stuff. This page collects some of my other interests, including cars, Lego, rugby league, RC crawlers, DIY, 3D printing, computers and retro gaming.

I don't know if I'd call myself a detailer, but I do like keeping our cars clean, shiny and smelling fresh. I drive an e46, I've never been tempted by anything newer, there's just something about them.

Lego and air rifles

Everyone at home loves Lego. Enough said about that.

My eldest and I are regulars at Atherton Indoor Range where we plink with .177 & .22 air rifles. We don't hold any records, but we both shoot pretty straight and true.

Rugby league

I'm a Wigan Warriors fan, they play rugby league — it's a Northern thing. They share the Brick Community Stadium with Wigan Athletic.

We're just up the road from Leigh Leopards, so we often pop along to their games too. I'll always be a Wigan fan, but I'm chuffed that Leigh are right up there with the big boys in Super League.

RC cars and crawlers

I enjoy RC cars & crawlers. We've got a couple of crawlers, a couple of fast buggies and a couple of bashers.

The kids play with them too; it's not just me being a 10 year old trapped in an adult's body!

DIY, electronics and 3D printing

I like tinkering with electronics and making things out of wood. I've got my cantilevered, leg-free desk thing down. I firmly believe that high CRI LEDs make most things better.

I'm half decent at DIY stuff, I know which end of a hammer is which and have a full set of metric & imperial spanners. We've got a Prusa 3D printer, which is very handy for fixing and modifying things.

Computers, consoles and retro gaming

My main PC dual boots Windows 11 and Fedora, my laptop dual boots Windows 11 and Ubuntu. Nicky and the kids are full Windows 11. Most of the Raspberry Pis at home run Raspberry Pi OS.

We like gaming. We're sorted with consoles from the Nintendo Entertainment System through to the PS5 Slim, with almost everything in between. We still play some retro stuff on real hardware, but the emulation on Raspberry Pi is so good now that most of the time it's a case of why bother unplugging, plugging in and all the other faff?
