Wuben X4

Wuben X4. One of my pals has a Wuben something or other and when I saw it I liked its thang.

I backed this one as a kickstarter a while ago and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. I got the two torch pack, one for me, one for Fin. He's developing his own love for torches. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

The torch's input in a simple push button and wheel to adjust the brightness of the main LEDs between 5 and 1500 lumen. It's a neutral white LED. The main torch does a flood as well as a spotlight so it provides a wide pool of light as well as a focused beam which makes the light it puts out seem like its from a much bigger torch.

The RGB strip on the side puts out 1 to 100 lumen. It's a warm white light by default. It does flashing colours and multi coloured strobe depending on how you press the button - red & blue, red & green and a bunch of others.

The torch has a design that I enjoy, there's lots of things on it, a push button & dial, a slide switch, tail switch, pocket clip. Its not a simple design and nor is it a tactical design, I think the best way to describe it is as a complex design. It's easy to use but has a reassuringly complex look, which I like.

It takes an 18650 battery, it came with a 3350mAh battery and an orange defuser. It's USB C rechargable, so it fits well with my power protocol for portable devices! On low power it lasts for ages, on full blast it gets hot and lasts a lot less. The main spot beam is well focused.

The bottom of the torch has a release for the battery flap and a quick press that in any of the modes puts the main torch on. I'm not sure it needs a quick button, but it fits in well with the style of the torch. The battery compartment fits an 18650 perfectly with no rattle, the spring on the bottom provides a great amount of resistence when you snap it closed. I'm not sure it needs a lock, but it compliments the style of the torch.

The business end has 4 LEDs two do wide throw and 2 do the focused beam. The brightness levels increase gradually as you roll the dial that is the main button. Before it hits turbo mode the LEDs go off and then come on at full blast, they don't want you missing the fact it's at full power. They claim the beam is 205m, I have no reason to doubt this. It's plenty bright for a small pocket torch.

The bottom cover has a magnet built into it so you can magnet it onto stuff if you want to. It's strong enough to hold the weight of the torch in both horizontal and vertical positions and provides a satisfying amout of pull when you magnet it onto something.

The torch fits in my hand well, feels good and the pocket clip is just the right size. Its 95x35x20mm it weighs about 140gr. The body made from aluminum, the lens is clear plastic. No lanyard hole, but I don't think it's that kind of torch, I've experimented with a lanyard on the pocket clip but I didn't like it, so I took it off. Some of the markings are etched and painted, some are just stencil painted on. I'm pleased with the torch and will be keeping my eye out on future kickstarters from them.
